Russell Crowe is suffering from a number of chronic injuries including a degenerating hip and torn Achilles tendons.

The actor admits working on action-packed movies over the years has taken a toll on his body, and he has now revealed the full extent of his physical problems.

Crowe has tears in both Achilles tendons, as well as a build up of fluid in the bone marrow around his knees, known as bone marrow edemas, a painful hip condition and shin splints, an injury which affects the lower part of the legs.

He tells Australian radio station Nova FM, “At 49, I find it a little bit difficult to run these days. I have grade four tears in both Achilles, I have shin splints, no cartilage in the toes in my right foot, I’ve got bone marrow edemas in under my knees and I have one degenerating hip…”

However, Crowe is able to laugh off his troubles, joking that he has been injuring himself on movie sets since playing the lead role in 2000 movie Gladiator, which is set in 180 A.D.

He adds, “The joke I tell is that I’ve been picking up injuries since 184 A.D. but if you’re gonna run around with tigers, that’s what you get I suppose.”

The admission comes just days before Crowe turns 50 on Monday, and when asked about the impending milestone, the actor replies, “Fiftieth birthday – can you believe it?”
